The Smoothing function is to reduce ripples in a measurement. Select the measurement or measurements to modify and select the Smoothing command from the Data Handling menu to display the Smoothing dialog. Alternatively press the Smooth button on the button bar.
Smoothing parameters box:
- Select a smoothing algorithm in the Algorithm dropdown box.
- Enter a value in the Sliding window size box. It defines the mean value region used for each smoothing operation. The larger the size, the larger the smoothing effect.
- Enter a value in the Resolution box, which defines the point distance in the curve(s) for the interpolation algorithm.
Smooth between box:
To restrict the smoothing to a certain part of the curve(s), two points in the profile are defined in this box. Smoothing will be performed between these two points.
Using the Start and stop coordinates option smooths the complete curve, whereas the Cursor positions option only smooths the area between the cursors (only available if cursors are enabled).
If you have zoomed to a certain view, selecting the Zoomed area option will only smooth the zoomed area.
For user-defined smoothing range, select Defined range and then enter the start and end values in the From and To boxes, respectively.
For profiles, the smoothing ranged can be also defined as the center range as percentage of the field size by selecting Inner field region (only profiles) and the entering a value in the Percentage box.
A selection is possible, whether only the Selected data shall be smoothed or All data. All data means the data displayed in the currently opened window and not all data in the project.
If the modified data and the original data should be shown at the same time, choose Keep the original data in the group, Original data.
Peak Analysis box:
The tolerance for peak analysis is defined in General Tolerances). See an example:
(Peak analysis is used to prevent over-processing due to bad quality of a curve. The icon on the left shows the validation statues:
: Passed
: Failed.
It is not recommended to perform smoothing if failed.
By clicking the OK button, smoothing will be performed regardless of the validation status.
