Step 1. Background measurement
-
Click the Start baseline measurement button. Overlay, Awaiting Beam Off, appears. Click Confirm Beam Off after the beam is turned off to continue.
-
The next overlay, Detector Changed Required, opens. Click Confirm change if the detectors are correct.
-
The overlay, Measuring Background, opens showing the elapsed time and remaining time of the on-going background measurement.
Step 2. Dose Rate Measurement
-
After background measurement finishes, an overlay, Dose Rate Preparation, appears and asks to create a beam for dose rate measurement according to the beam information in the overlay. Dose rate measurement starts automatically after beam is on.
Dose rate measurement starts automatically after beam is on. An overlay, Waiting for Beam off, asks to wait until the expected monitor units are delivered.
Note:Once the dose rate is measured with an FF beam. It can be measured again by clicking the dose rate Run button under Summary. The re-run dose rate measurement has the option for a FFF beam measurement (see Dose Rate for FFF Beams in SMARTSCAN - Baseline Measurements Page).
- When the measurement finishes (the beam is off), the dose rate is displayed, and the next overlay appears and displays the settings for CAX check measurements.
Step 3. CAX check measurements
-
CAX Check starts automatically after beam is on. The SW automatically starts normalization, the four CAX profile measurements, and finally displays the status under Summery and the CAX check result dialog if at least one CAX Check parameter failed.
CAX check measurements - the profile is displayed online during the measurements. -
If CAX check is failed, there are the following options:
-
Failed due to only shift deviation out of tolerance: click the link here to adjust the isocenter in the CCU
-
Failed due to at least one angle deviation out of tolerance: physically align the phantom and repeat the CAX check by clicking the Remeasure button.
-
Click Accept result. A dialog pops up; click Yes to passed CAX check passed; click No to close the dialog.
See CAX Check Status Display in SMARTSCAN - Baseline Measurements Page for detailed information.
-
Step 4. Preliminary scans (optional)
-
Example: For a normal LINAC with minimum and maximum energies of 4 and 10 MV, respectively measured with a 3D phantom.
Note:
The procedure for Halcyon measured with a Blue PhantomCOMPACT is similar but with different scans (see the required scan in General Description in SMARTSCAN - Baseline Measurements Page).
-
Preliminary scans are not mandatory but can be started by clicking the Run button. The overlay, Waiting For Beam, appears and displays the measurement settings of first group of measurements.
SMARTSCAN wizard > Baseline Measurement page
-
Create a beam for 4 MV; set field size of 100 mm × 100 mm according the overlay. Once the beam is on, the wizard performs:
-
Normalization
-
Depth dose
-
Crossline
-
Inline
When the first group of measurement finishes (all monitor units have been delivered), the overlay, Wait For Beam, appears.
-
-
Create a beam of 15 MV; set field size: 100 mm × 100 mm according the overlay. Once the beam is on, the wizard performs:
-
Normalization (due to the change of energy)
-
Depth dose
-
Crossline
-
Inline
When this group of measurement finishes, the overlay, Detector Change Required, appears.
-
- Change the detectors as indicated in the overlay and then click Confirm change. The wizard starts the background measurement. Once finishes, the overlay, Waiting For Beam, appears.
-
Create beam for 4 MV; set field size: 300 mm × 300 mm according the overlay. Once the beam is on, the wizard performs:
-
Normalization (due to the change of energy, field size, and reference detector)
-
Depth dose
-
Crossline
-
Inline
When the first group of measurement finishes, the overlay, Wait For Beam, appears.
-
-
Create a beam of 15 MV; set field size: 300 mm × 300 mm according the overlay. Once the beam is on, the wizard performs:

Normalization (due to the change of energy)

Crossline

-
If the results of preliminary scans are passed, a green checkmark appears under Summary. If the results of preliminary scans are failed, the overlay, Preliminary Scans Results, will appear. See Status of Preliminary Scans in SMARTSCAN - Baseline Measurements Page for further actions.
